☕ Historical Spread of Coffee

Ethiopia (9th century): Coffee is believed to have first grown naturally in the Kaffa region (where the word coffee may come from).

Yemen (15th century): Coffee plants were cultivated, and Sufi monks brewed it to stay alert for night prayers. The port city of Mocha became a key coffee trade hub.

Middle East (16th century): Coffeehouses, called qahveh khaneh, flourished in cities like Mecca, Cairo, and Istanbul—places where people gathered to drink, discuss, and play music.

Europe (17th century): Coffee reached Venice and spread across Europe, first seen with suspicion, even called the “devil’s drink,” until Pope Clement VIII blessed it. Coffeehouses soon became “penny universities,” where for the price of a coffee, people exchanged ideas.

Asia & the Americas (17th–18th century): Coffee cultivation expanded to India, Java (Indonesia), the Caribbean, and South America through colonial trade. Brazil eventually became the world’s largest coffee producer.
